“Your career is not what brings home your pay cheque, your career is what you were put on earth for to do with such passion and intensity that it becomes spiritual in calling.” – Vincent van Gogh
Liza strongly believes that one can NEVER stop learning. Ever since she can remember, Liza wanted to be a chef. So in high school, she entered the culinary world by taking part in cooking competitions and working voluntarily over weekends. In 2008, she completed her BTech in Hospitality Management (cum laude) at the Central University of Technology (CUT) Free State. She started her career at Le Quartier Francais and the Cape Grace Hotel and was appointed as a lecturer’s assistant at CUT from 2007-2009.
She also worked as a part-time chef for the Upper Crust Catering company, working specifically after hours or over weekends to stay in touch with the industry. In 2009, she was promoted to junior chef of culinary studies at CUT and again in 2013, this time as head chef of the CUT Hotel School. While working at CUT, Liza had her own private catering company on the side. During her annual leave, Liza worked for a few months in the industry to stay in touch with current trends through establishments like La Motte's Pierneef Restaurant, among others.
Liza realised she had found her career and her place in the hospitality education industry the first day she stood before a class of anxious students. For the past nine years, she has been committed to helping students develop their practical skills and brainpower by encouraging them to think further.
Liza married in 2012 and relocated to Cape Town where she worked as a sous chef at Roxanne Floquet Cake Design and Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs before studying for a Diploma in Patisserie for the International Hotel School at its Cape Town campus. Two years later, she and her husband again relocated to Pretoria where Liza was appointed head of the Professional Cookery Department at the Capital Hotel School and Training Academy. When the opportunity arrived to be part of the start- up team at Ivory Manor, Liza grabbed the opportunity with both hands as she felt it was time to take a break from higher education. She is studying for a Master’s degree in Higher Education Studies through the University of Free State, which specifically focuses on chef graduates in the world of work.
Apart from cooking, Liza loves sport and completed her first Comrades Marathon in 2012. She is also a qualified Pilates instructor and loves to be active and to stay fit. Her next challenge is to make her childhood dream of obtaining her private pilot licence come true. Liza believes life should be lived to the fullest and that you should always challenge yourself to be better.
As she says: “I have a deep passion for my career, I embrace life to the fullest, I am a hard worker and I know where I am heading. I also know that I am where I am by God's grace and for that I am truly thankful.”
